We are in the calm before the storm. I’m not saying this to create fear, but I’m saying this because God is giving us an unprecedented opportunity to position ourselves for what’s coming. One of the biggest lies the enemy has infiltrated into the church is that there’s something wrong with Christians having money. This lie has kept believers enslaved, unable to mobilize the resources God wants to use in the next season.
Let me be blunt: another storm is coming. But this time, you don’t have to miss your window.
The Truth About Christians and Wealth
I grew up as the oldest of five kids, raised by a single mother on welfare. We had abusive stepdads, and I know what it’s like to eat from pantries and wear every layer of clothing just to survive without heat. Yet today, we’re filling stadiums, writing bestselling books, and God has completely transformed our financial situation.
Here’s what I’ve learned: whoever you are poor is who you will be wealthy. If you’re stingy with little money, you’ll be stingy with much. If you’re generous with nothing, God will increase your ability to give abundantly.
The root issue isn’t your bank account, it’s your mindset about money and your understanding of God’s desire for your financial health.
Breaking Generational Financial Curses
In my book Inherit Your Freedom, I write extensively about breaking generational curses. Many of you are under generational curses of poverty and lack, and you have to be the breaker. You have to be the first person in your family who says, “This may run in my family, but I am where it runs out.”
When my financial advisor, Patrick Chandle,r first looked at my personal finances, he said something that shocked me: “Your bank account isn’t the problem, it’s your mind.” Even though I was pastoring two churches and ministering globally, I had deep-seated mentalities about money that needed surgical correction.
I remember our conversation about life insurance. The root of my resistance wasn’t financial, it was this deep-seated idea that I wasn’t even going to be around long enough for it to matter. Here I was, casting demons of depression and anxiety out of other people, yet my own choices reflected mentalities that needed breakthrough.
The Spiritual Stronghold of Debt
Patrick revealed something sobering: We have a spiritual stronghold in America that’s prevailing in the area of debt. Trillions of dollars in marketing are spent to imprison us financially because corporations know that if they can get your money, they can get your heart.
The Bible says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” When you sign for that credit card or car loan, you literally give away your freedom. The borrower becomes slave to the lender. This isn’t just financial wisdom, it’s spiritual truth.
Your Practical Path to Financial Freedom
Here are the Biblical steps to transform your financial future over the next four years:
1. Build Your Emergency Foundation
Get one month of expenses in a savings account immediately. Statistics show over 90% of Americans couldn’t handle a $1,000 emergency without going into debt. This step breaks the slavery cycle.
2. Create a Budget That Gives Permission
A budget isn’t a prison. It gives you permission to spend. Most people say they have a budget, but almost 100% of them are still in debt. You need a budget you actually use, not just one you look at.
3. Eliminate Debt Completely
This is non-negotiable. Debt is a spiritual stronghold that must be broken. Every payment you make to creditors is money that could be building your future instead of paying for your past.
4. Build Your Safety Net
Accumulate 3-6 months of expenses in an interest-bearing account. This isn’t just financial wisdom, it’s preparing for the storms that will come.
5. Invest for the Future
15% of everything you make should go toward retirement preparation. It’s a spiritual discipline to prepare for the future. Don’t put unfair pressure on the next generation to care for you when you can honor God by stewarding what He’s given you.
6. Become Excellent at Your Calling
The fastest way to increase your income is to become the best in the world at what God has called you to do. Whether you’re a teacher, firefighter, or stay-at-home parent, expertise and focus generate more revenue than you can imagine.
The Window of Opportunity
The next four years will be the most pivotal season of your financial life. You’ll either position yourself and your family to be a blessing on every occasion, or you’ll spend the rest of your life lacking and begging.
I’ve seen this pattern in every major crisis: 2000, 2008, the pandemic. While everyone focuses on the crash and despair, they miss the phoenix that rises from the ashes. Companies are birthed, small businesses explode into success, and entrepreneurs who believe what God tells them prosper exponentially.
This is your moment to break the cycle.
Moving from Revelation to Application
Revelation is powerful, but application is where miracles happen. You can’t just watch someone else fulfill the Great Commission online. This is your chance to get off the shelf and step into what God has prepared for you.
The Bible says a good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children. By that definition, I realized I was about to minister to everyone else’s family while leaving my own family nothing. That’s when I made the decision to invest in financial wisdom, and it completely transformed not just my bank account, but my entire approach to stewardship.
Your Next Step
God desires for you to prosper even as your soul prospers. He wants your mind healthy, your emotions healthy, your physical body healthy, and yes, your finances healthy. Healthy things grow, and if you’re faithful with little, He’ll make you ruler over much.
The calm before the storm is ending. The question isn’t whether another storm is coming, it’s whether you’ll be prepared this time.
